Ring the Bells!

John 3:14-21
(The story that Jesus is talking about with Nicodemus is in Numbers 21:4-9.)
The third verse sounds a lot like a verse we know. For God so loved the world…that is the reason behind Christmas. Just like in Numbers, we are righteously under the punishment of God. We are dying and have no way to save ourselves. But God has provided. The bronze snake on a stake in the Old Testament is just a picture of the Son of God hung on a cross in the New. But the premise is the same: Lift your eyes, believe God, and be saved.

2. The bronze snake couldn’t save – it was a mere symbol of God’s salvation. Eventually, godly King Hezekiah had to destroy it because the people were worshipping the snake rather than God (2 Kings 18:4). We do the same thing at Christmas (and all year round). We worship things that are just representations of God, His blessings and love for us. Like the presents or the president, our families or football, or medicine or merry making. This Christmas what idol is vying for your worship? How will you dethrone it?
